Love, my heart longs day and night for the meeting with you—for the meeting that is like all-devouring death.
愛，我的心日以繼夜地盼望跟你相會──如吞滅一切之死亡的相會。

Sweep me away like a storm; take everything I have; break open my sleep and plunder my dreams. Rob me of my world.
像風暴一般把我捲走，掃光我所有的一切，劈開我的睡眠，搶走我的夢，破壞我的世界。

在那毀滅中，在靈魂展現的赤裸中，讓我們在美感裡合而為一。

Alas for my vain desire! Where is this hope for union except in thee, my God?
啊，我還空想什麼！除非在你裡面，我能跟誰合而為一呢，上天？

愛、美、我、上天，合而為一！

這是泰戈爾｢ 日以繼夜 ｣所 ｢盼望｣ 的｢相會 ｣；是他畢生所追求的藝術最高境界。

這樣的相會非常猛烈，｢像風暴一般｣，瞬間摧毀塵世一切的虛偽外表，掃除無聊的功名財富，粉碎那些永不滿足的癡心妄想，破壞整個安穩的｢世界 ｣…只剩下｢靈魂展現的赤裸 ｣。

靈魂要坦率地展現自己，毫不掩飾的表達自我，它要在｢美感裡 ｣跟上天｢ 合而為一 ｣；此時｢我 ｣就在上天｢裡面 ｣了。這就是那珍貴的短暫的永恆！

詩人用詩，不是用分析的數據，而是以具體的意象表達他的美感經驗，讓讀者直接與之共鳴。

Free me from the bonds of your sweetness, my love! No more of this wine of kisses.

釋放我吧，從你甜蜜的枷鎖中¸ 我愛! 不要再斟上親吻的美酒。

This mist of heavy incense stifles my heart.

濃香的迷霧窒息我的心。

Open the doors, make room for the morning light.

打開門，讓晨光進來。

I am lost in you, wrapped in the folds of your caresses.

我被你迷住了，被你的愛撫綑綁著。

Free me from your spells, and give me back the manhood to offer you my freed heart.

釋放我，從你的魔咒中，把男子氣概還給我，好讓我把自由的心獻給你。

太甜蜜的生活很容易腐蝕雄心壯志¸ 在安逸的時光中¸ 創作的動力就會鬆弛下來。想做大事的人就不能過分沉迷於歡樂之中。所以泰戈爾會抗拒｢ 甜蜜的枷鎖｣， 他不要喝太多｢ 親吻的美酒｣。
芳香溫馨的氣氛令人陶醉，但如果耽溺太久，生命力就會委弱。因此泰戈爾不要｢濃香的迷霧 ｣ ｢窒息我的心 ｣。
要使生命更茁壯，就要提供它更多的營養、更多的刺激。孟子說：｢無敵國外患者國恒亡 。｣不可以關起門來苟且偷安，應該｢ 打開門，讓晨光進來。｣
太舒適、太溫柔、太甜美都會誘人沉溺，形成枷鎖。有志於創作的人都要警覺。
掙脫迷人的｢魔咒 ｣，重獲自由，你才有機會｢把自由的心 ｣奉獻出去。

 

永恆 Immortal

如果我對死後的不朽功名的追求破滅了，那就讓我活著的時候永恆吧。

My love, once upon a time your poet launched a great epic in his mind.
我愛，有一天你的詩人在他心裡建構一部偉大的史詩。
 
Alas, I was not careful, and it struck your ringing anklets and came to grief.
唉，我一不小心，它就撞上了你叮噹作響的腳鐲而造成悲劇。
 
It broke up into scraps of songs and lay scattered at your feet.
它裂成詩歌的碎片散落在你的腳邊。
 
All my cargo of the stories of old wars was tossed by the laughing waves and soaked in tears and sank.
我所有的滿載古代戰爭故事的貨品被嘲笑的聲浪所顛簸，被淚水浸透而下沉。
 
You must make this loss good to me, my love.
你必須使我因禍得福，我愛。
 
If my claims to immortal fame after death are shattered, make me immortal while I live.
如果我對死後的不朽功名的追求破滅了，那就讓我活著的時候永恆吧。
 
And I will not mourn for my loss nor blame you.
而我將毫無遺憾，也不怪你。

  

雖然這首詩裡有第一人稱、第二人稱和第三人稱，其實全是獨白。｢你的詩人｣是｢我｣；｢我愛｣是靈感，其實也是｢我｣，是詩人自己。

藝術創作有世俗的部分和心靈的部分：一個人使用文字寫成詩，印成書，被欣賞…這些全是世俗的，它牽涉到｢功名｣和利祿；泰戈爾更重視的是心靈的部分：靈感使他的生命掙脫時空，超越自我，在愛的激情狂喜中體驗｢永恆｣。

如果靈感來了，但未能落實為世俗的作品時，那些寶貴的雄心和計畫｢被淚水浸透而下沉｣，當然可惜，但泰戈爾說：只要｢讓我活著的時候永恆｣，他就毫無遺憾了。

藝術創作活動過程中的虛與實原是極複雜的美學議題和哲學思考，泰戈爾用很平易的文字寫成簡短隽永的詩句，使讀者在吟詠詩篇時不自覺地開悟了。
